Many of us have heard the words “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. However, how true is that?
Apparently very true according to a study published last week. This study involved 160 women between the ages of 45 to 65. These women were divided into two groups. One group was given 75 grams of dried apple slices every day for a year. The other group consumed prunes—100 grams per day
The results in the apple group, described as “dramatic” by the researchers, showed a drop of 23% of the bad cholesterol (LDL) and a rise of 4% of the good cholesterol (HDL). It is thought that polyphenols and pectin, a soluble fibre, contained in apples, provided the cardiovascular benefits.
Pectin also helps with a feeling of being full. Another benefit of consuming apples was weight loss.
It is important to remember that the study did not look at apple juice and apple pie. The point is that one must consume whole foods and not processed foods. Eat natural as much as possible. Whole foods are the way to go.
Remember that children pay more attention to what you do than what you say; so lead by example and eat fruits every day.
