Try a thing you have not done three times. Once, to get over the fear of doing it.

Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time to figure out whether you like it or not

About one year ago I started to keep a file which I read when I get discouraged. We all will face some days where life is not fair and when we face unexpected rejection.

On Friday, April the 13th, 2012, after writing a health column for Canada’s Globe and Mail for almost two years, I was told “We like your writing. Do not take this personal but we no longer want you to write for us. We plan to replace you with another pediatrician.”

So here is my encouragement to any of you who may have down days. Keep a record of times when others affirmed you. Maybe you were told you are kind or generous. Maybe someone else observed you are very organized.

Whatever compliments you got, keep a file and encourage yourself when you need it.

I was encouraged by Joel Osteen to keep a file just like that. I got over the fear of doing it (Will it lead to pride? No it did not) I now have learned how to use it often—I have a consistent system to record positive things said about me.

And to be honest, there are days when nobody will encourage you…so encourage yourself.

Even in the Bible we read about how King David encouraged himself (1Samuel 30)
