Being a teenager is not easy. Being a parent of a teenager is even harder.
In my study, as I exit, I deliberately placed a copy of a recent National Geographic Magazine. The October 2011 copy has on the cover “The New Science of the Teenage Brain”
So what is new?
Basically teens make decisions between two main choices: rewards and consequences. For example they know that driving too fast has consequences, but they tend to go for the reward which is so huge they ignore what they know about consequences.
I encourage you to read that piece. Get it from the library or online if you are not a subscriber. It may not fix things overnight but at least it will improve your understanding of a teen’s brain.
